DIY Beach House Sign

It's a beautiful morning and I am sitting on the back porch enjoying the sun and breezes we get here.  I love that I can sit out here and work to the sound of the birds, the waterfall and the chimes - such sweet music to work with - if we could just have it year round. Ahh, yes...
Today, I thought I would share the Beach House sign I made for our Spring/Summer mantel with you.  I am all about keeping things as simple as I can so I used Chalk Couture's chalk paste and transfer to make a sign that would I would be able to use through both seasons.

Vintage Paint and more... step-by-step tutuorial to make your own beach house sign with Chalk Couture products. Made in just minutes and ready to display.

I love how easy it is to use these products and how quickly this Beach House sign was to make.  Done and on the shelf in less than 30 minutes.  Pretty cool, right? Such an easy peasy project - let me show you just how easy it is.

What you will need:

I made a video giving step-by-step instructions to make it.  You can view it or I have written the instructions out below that you can follow.

First of all, I am using the 9"x18" box frame from Chalk Couture.  This is a one-time use board but can be chalked on both sides to make two projects.  I love this board because I can have a sign for two different seasons or holidays on the same piece - making it a great duo use decor item.

You will want to wax this board with some furniture wax - I use the Johnson's Clear Minwax wax here.  But, you can use your favorite.  This step should not be skipped as it keeps the transfer from adhering too tightly and causing it to stretch when it is removed.  Your board is ready to buff in about 15 minutes.

After you have completed the waxing and buffing of the board you are ready to place your transfer.

You will want to center it nicely and then smooth it down especially around each letter to assure no "bleeding" under the transfer when you apply the chalk.

Now it's time to add the first color of chalk paste - which is Morning Sky - my favorite shade of blue.  I just take a small stir stick and dab little bits of paste over the transfer.  I put a little at the top and at the bottom leaving the center free of paste.  This is so we can place the Liberty blue paste between them to make the ombre effect.

Now, using a squeegee, I spread the chalk paste evenly over the upper third of the transfer and then the lower third of the transfer like above.

I then applied the liberty paste in the center third of the transfer making sure the colors meet but don't actually mix yet.  But, if they do, it's not a problem.

Vintage Paint and more... blending two colors of Chalk Couture chalk paste to make the ombre look for a beach sign

Now, using my finger I blend the two colors together along both edges where they meet.  You can blend until you get the result your looking for.  Scrape off any excess with your squeegee and discard it.

Now you can slowly remove the transfer to reveal what you have.  A beautiful ombre effect beach sign to add to your summer decor.  I love how this technique works - it's always so pretty. And, check out the crispness of the letters and the way the transfer gives it a bit of a distressed look.  So, in love with these products - perfection.

And, here's the finished sign.  So pretty - I absolutely love it - and it looks so amazing on our summer mantel. And, the best part is it took me about 15 minutes to make it.  So quick, so easy, and so pretty.  That's my kind of craft project.

If you would like your own you can follow the links above for the product to make it and then either watch the video or follow the instructions.  If you would rather buy this sign - you can find it in my Etsy shop. If you have any questions just email me - I'll be glad to help you in any way.

Until next time, have fun creating something you love.
