Organizing with a French Hamper

Hi everyone.
Are you all still trying to get your first of the year organization done like I am?  I have to say I am still on my quest to get a few things organized around here.  I have to admit I have not made a huge difference as I have been a bit under the weather.  I have a small project I put together to organize my out of control yarn supply  - a cute little French Hamper that I think you will enjoy.  I am also joining with the ladies of A Dose of DIY today.  This month's theme is, of course, organization. Just in time for me to get this little hamper off my to do list and into a functional state.

I found this rather drab old hamper at Good Will and picked it up thinking I could use it in some way.

Not too pretty - woven raffia or reeds of some sort and dull.  It was quite dirty and needed a good cleaning also. So I set to work on cleaning it before I did any kind of rehab to it.

As you can see the inside was lined with an unattractive brown fabric that really needed to be discarded - so I removed it and discarded it.  Then cleaned the inside also.

I then painted the outside with a very pretty grey - Valspar's Gravity.  I had a sample jar of it and it actually took almost the whole jar to get a decent coverage. This color reminds me so much of many of the French baskets and hampers I have seen. I then traced the letter "C" on the front and painted it with some black chalkboard paint.  I had thought of doing more to it but really wanted to keep it quite simple for now.

I had several yards of black French Toile fabric on hand that I picked up years ago and have been wanting to use on something.  So I decided this was the perfect project - lining the inside of the hamper.  It was an easy project and I have no photos of the process because my head is not thinking right at this time. (Colds give me a fuzzy brain) All I did was cut a square for the top and hot glue it into place.  Then I cut one to fit the bottom and hot glued it into place.

This is a better picture of it with the lid open.  I really am loving the finished piece - it definitely is a contrast to what it was.  I started crocheting a lot this past year  - I have been sharing a few afghans with you - and have accumulated quite a bit of leftover yarns.  I need to store them somewhere  besides the bottom of my closet. I decided this little hamper is the perfect place.

It fits perfectly under my French sewing table and is quite handy to get to should I need some of that yarn.

I really am pleased with how it turned out. I know that I will get a lot of use out of it. And now I have one more hot spot corralled and organized.  Now to get to the rest of that list.

Until next time enjoy creating something you love.

  13. I noticed you said, you used a jar of paint. Would'nt it have been easier, to use spray paint? Valspar, has beautiful color selections in their spay paints.
