Updated Master Bed

Written by: Cathy Carroll, Vintage, Paint and more...

Good morning friends,
Hope this finds you all doing well.
We are having the most lovely weather here at the beach
and
enjoying every minute of it.
I want to share a long over do project with you that  I have been meaning to get to.
I have been talking about redoing our bedroom for quite some time now
and
have finally gotten it to a place that I can begin to show you what I have been doing.
So, grab a cup of your favorite java or tea and come with me.
Our first installment will be the new bed linens....

Updated Master Bed - drop cloth ruffle on pillow sham, diy pillow sham, drop cloth pillow, French topography pillow

We have been living here for two years now and our bedroom was put on the back burner
so to speak.
I just had so many things to do that giving our room a makeover was not one of the priorities.
This January I finally decided it was time - no more putting things off.
I decided to start with the bed.
I do not have any before pictures because they were really embarassing.
I can tell you it was just a bed with sheets and a blanket on it.
Nothing fancy at all.

When we moved here I repainted the room a beautiful grey blue
by Valspar called Seashore Fog.
I wanted the bed linens to coordinate with the color and knew that I would not
be able to find what I wanted at a thrift store.
So, I saved my pennies until I had enough to buy this  one.
I finally found the perfect one - the color was just right
and
Papa actually liked it.

I found it at our local KMart - it's a Jacquelyn Smith comforter and bed set.
I fell in love with it immediately.
But, when I got it home - I decided it needed a little tweaking
as does everything I buy.
I am just never satisfied with what I find in the stores.
I always have to add something or take something away or change the color...
Something always needs a little tweak...
The pillow shams were just plain rectangles and did not look very nice on the bed.
They needed something to give them a little oomph.
This is where my love for drop cloth fabric comes to play....

Updated Master Bed - drop cloth ruffle added to pillow sham

I made a little ruffle out of the drop cloth fabric that I added some buttonhole lace to
and
then sewed that onto the plain pillow sham.
I then added another row of buttonhole lace on the pillow sham itself.

This separates the blue pillow sham from the blue comforter a bit.
Giving it a little more texture and depth.
I also did not like the bed skirt that came with it.
It was also  blue in color and it just seemed like too much blue.
So, in keeping with the beachy colors I love
I also made a drop cloth bed skirt.

A very simple one with not too much fullness.
I love the contrast against the blue comforter.
It gives me the perfect combination I was looking for.
The brown of the beach and the blue of the sea and the sky.

I then made some decorator pillows to place in front of the pillow shams.
Updated Master Bed - French topography pillow, using decorator pillows on the bed

I made two from some French topography fabric I bought at Hobby Lobby
about two years ago I think.
It was $8.99 a yard but I had a 40% off coupon on one length of 5 yards.
I got it all for $27.00 (it would have been $45.00).
What an awesome savings.
I love when I can do that....
You will be seeing more of this fabric showing up in this room later.
The pillow in the middle is temporary because I am working on the one that I am going
to put there.
Updated Mater Bed - using drop cloth fabric to embellish a comforter set, decorator pillows in the bedroom, blue bedroom

I wanted to start showing you this room as it is my main project right now.
I have a lot of tweaking to do to it
and
you will be seeing a lot of projects here.
I don't have a headboard for this bed - it's a king size bed
and
the guys haven't been able to build it yet.
Hopefully in the near future.
I am just thrilled that I have a completed bed with a comforter,
pillow shams, bed skirt and decorator pillows.
That has not been the case in quite a while.
I am totally in love with  it.
I will be showing you more projects for this room as I get them completed.
