DIY Multipurpose Cabinet

Good morning everyone.

 Today I want to share with you a project that "T" has been working on for a few weeks.  He was commissioned to make a cabinet for a friend of his and in his "spare" time has been working on it.  I call it a multipurpose cabinet because I can think of so many uses for it however, she is going to be using it in her bathroom.  

I forget to go to the garage when he is working and take pictures of the process but I have a few you can see.

This is the finished cabinet.  I am not too fond of the color that she chose to stain it - Minwax Sedona Red.  It is way too red for me however it does match the woods in her home and she is quite pleased with it.

She is using it in her bathroom for storage. This is the top cabinet area open that is large enough to store several towels or whatever she chooses.

Second is the smaller drawer that is a good size to store quite a few items.

Then is the part I love - a clothes hamper including a bag.  I love this idea for a bathroom or a bedroom.  But you could use it for all sorts of storage - your imagination could go wild with this piece.  Needless to say I think we will be getting one of these at our house or two or three...

So much space in one little cabinet - so many uses.  I love it.

 Now that "T" has finished this project he wants to finish a couple of others that were put on hold. With the cooler temps here Papa and I have been painting the living and dining rooms and I will be sharing that with you soon, along with a few other additions to that area of the house. Can't wait to get to that point.

On an added note - this weekend was quite exciting for our family as "T's" daughter - our granddaughter became engaged. He proposed to her right after he graduated from the Marine Basic Camp - right in the parking lot!

Needless to say she was quite surprised as were all of us.  The wedding is not for quite a while as she has to finish college and he has to finish his training.  But we are looking forward to lots of wedding planning in the future.

Merry Christmas

Only two days till Christmas and I am busy putting the last minute touches on everything.  School is out and Miss A is beyond excited.  She has been through the packages under the tree a dozen times trying to figure out what is in them and her older siblings are just egging her on.  Oh the joys of being the youngest.

Throwback Thursday - Ana White Shelf

It's Throwback Thursday and I want to bring back a little family project we did back in 2012.
I found the most wonderful shelf unit on Ana White's site - Build a Rustic X Console.
Ana has a plethora of the most marvelous plans for all kinds of furniture and they are simple to follow  - so my son says.  My granddaughter's needed a shelf unit in their room for their TV, books, DVD's - all the things girls collect.  They fell in love with this one the same as I did.  So we proceeded to build it.

TBT - Happy Anniversary

We are still on vacation and having a great time in Florida.

Since this is Throwback Thursday and tomorrow is our 45th wedding anniversary I thought I would share a really old pic with you all.  This is a snapshot of us on our wedding day.  Our professional wedding pics were lost in a fire at the photographers.  So, this is what we have.  

Anyway, take a look at the style, lol.... crew cuts, bow ties, winged glasses with a glare from the flash, bouffant hair styles - we really thought we were stylin'.    So fun to look back on those long ago days.

Tiny Entrepreneur

The other day we were all sitting around discussing our upcoming trip to Florida; talking about what exactly we wanted to do while we were there and of course, Disney had to be in the equation. ( You can meetour multigenerational family here).  Our little Miss A decided she would need some spending money for there and her Dad told her she really needed to earn her own this year since she is getting older and can earn it by doing some "chores" around the house.  She really didn't like the idea of doing "chores"  so, she came up with her own idea.

Changing Rooms

Good Morning everyone.

Hope all you Mother's had a wonderful Mother's Day yesterday

and

all you non-mothers enjoyed celebrating with your mothers.

We had a very quiet day ourselves.

We went to church, then brunch, then spent the afternoon

just enjoying each others company.

Those types of get-togethers are just so relaxing and fun.

I think I enjoy them the most.

A couple of posts ago I was telling you about some changes that 

are being made here.

These are room changes involving - not one

but,

three rooms.

All three are being moved and their uses are being reworked 

to fit our ever changing needs.

New Years Goals

It is so hard for me to believe it is January 8 already.

We have been traveling throughout this holiday

and

are finally home.

But, as always happens time did not stand still here

and

there is so much to do.

We were in the Midwest this past couple weeks

and

while we were there for this

we were able to leave before the big snows hit

and

the sub zero temperatures.

Albeit, we did have single digit temps here at the beach.

Unusual but, not unheard of.

So, I have been hibernating as I really don't care for anything

below about 60 degrees.

 My Christmas tree is still up and most of my decorations

but,

instead of worrying about them

I decided to sit down and think about the coming year.

I am not a person who is able to set resolutions

and keep them. 

In fact, I hate resolutions.

Instead - I set goals for myself.

But, I do it differently than most people do.

I set my goals by month, week and day.

I am also a person that is still caught in the pre- tech days

and

love to write everything down with pen and paper.

I love to make lists just so I can cross off each item

as I finish it.

This act gives me such a feeling of accomplishment - to look at

a list with lots of cross offs.

So, I have been making lists and scheduling the items in my planner.

I actually make several lists with goals for the year.

They are divided into categories:

personal goals

house goals

blog goals

and

misc. goals.

I then take each goal and assign it to a month - I usually only do 3 months at a time.

If I try to do the whole year and I get behind it frustrates me.

For example - I am in the process of redoing our kitchen.

I actually started this before Thanksgiving.

I still have several projects to finish for it, along with the reorganization of some

of the areas.

So, for January I have made the kitchen my house goal.

I then took each thing that had to be done to finish it

and

assigned it a day in January to do.

That way I should be done by the end of January and be able to

show the big reveal of our newly redecorated kitchen.

I follow this same procedure with all my goals.

My January  goals are as follows:

House - finish all projects and organization of the kitchen

Personal - start a healthy eating program ( you will hear more about that later)

and a walking program

Blog - actually set up a posting schedule along with social media scheduling

and

Misc - finish my oldest granddaughters scrapbook.

Stick with me as I take you through all the projects I have planned for our

"new" kitchen

and

begin my new healthy lifestyle changes.

Christmas Traditions

 

Our family - as most families -  has many traditions at this time of year.

There are activities that we have been doing since the oldest were toddlers

and

if I try to skip any of these activities

I am nearly crucified.

They have become the expected and are actually a big part of what

Christmas is to our grand kids.

 

 

Baking is one of our number one traditions

and

they all get into it no matter their age.

These two older girls have been baking with Grandma since

they were toddlers.

 

 

 

The only difference now is that they can actually

do most of it by themselves

and

 have become great cookie and candy bakers.

 

 

However, this is the kitchen while they are working.

(Just keeping it real....)

 

 

The two younger have now joined in the fun

and

help with what they can do

to make all those delicious delectables.

We make a day of it and have a blast together.

Of course, it includes eating a fair amount of the wares

and

a cup or two of hot chocolate

and

if it's too warm we just turn the AC way down.

 

 

Another activity that they have to do each year is

trim Grandma's tree.

This is a big party and when we lived in the Midwest

where all eight of our grand kids were it was a big affair.

We still carry on the tradition here with just the four that are here.

They enjoy picking their special ornaments to put on the tree

and

placing them in just the right spot for all to see.

They each tell little tales of memories they have of their special ornament

and

share lots of laughs and giggles as they reminisce.

 

After it is done we all admire it and tell each other

what a great job we did this year

and

as the youngest says

"This is the best tree ever!"

 

 

Then it's hot cocoa, some of those cookies

and

"The Polar Express".

It just wouldn't be Christmas if we didn't usher it in

with this great movie.

We wrap up in blankets even if it's 80 outside (the AC on, again)

and

cuddle up together.

It's one of the happiest times that I enjoy so much with them.

 

 

We always have a craft day.

I try to find age appropriate crafts that span all the ages.

They love to create

and

part of Christmas is creating together.

This year they made this little snowman

and

some clay tags.

 

Both quite simple for them to do

(the older helping the younger)

and

very cute and useful items when they were done.

They really enjoyed using their own creativity with the tags.

I love what they came up with.

 

 

We always take a couple of evenings with the grands

and

catch the movie of the season.

This is year it was the new

"Hunger Games: Catching Fire"

(the younger two skipped this one)

and

"Frozen".

Then it's home for more hot cocoa and cookies.

 

 

We have a new tradition that we started when we moved here to the beach.

Brookgreen Gardens puts on an annual

"Night of a Thousand Candles" event.

This is a fairy tale walk through the garden at night.

It is lit with fairy lights and candles

and

 is absolutely mesmerizing and beautiful.

The kids love it.

We get hot cocoa (of course) and coffee,

bundle up and go for a long stroll.

 

 

 

 

I am not the greatest night photographer

but,

we enjoy all the lights hanging from tree limbs,

surrounding the tree trunks and rambling through the grasses.

There are little tents scattered throughout the gardens

with small orchestras of music playing

that lends to the ambiance.

The statuary of the gardens are spotlighted in wondrous ways

and

 the whole of it is a fairy land come live.

The girls, especially revel in the imaginative it come alive for them.

I, too can get totally lost in this land of

Christmas wonder.

Happy Birthday, Sissy.....

 

 

 

 

 

 

Today is another special day at our house...

Today we wish our

sweet Sissy

HAPPY BIRTHDAY....

 

Sissy turns 17 today

and

finally ended the month long time

of sharing the same age as Mimi...

 

Mimi and Sissy  are sisters

and

are alike in some ways

but,

so much different in others.

 

 

Sissy is very quiet and introspective

with

 a very serious attitude toward life.

She pretty much knows what her goals are

and

what is going to take to achieve them.

But, as most young ladies her age

is

questioning some of her goals...

 

 

She enjoys playfulness just as much as seriousness.

 

 

Loves horseback riding

 

 

The beach

and

plays basketball and volleyball...

 

 

 

Very diligent in her studies

and

has been earning college credits

even though she is a high school junior....

 

 

Our sweet little Sissy

has

grown into

 

 

a beautiful and wonderful young lady....

 

 

We love you Sissy...
