TBT - Loft Guest Room

Vintage, Paint and more... thrifted and diyed retro teen guest room

Today I am going to bring back the loft as it was in the summer of 2012.  When we moved here that spring it was totally put to the bottom of the list to do anything with as we really didn't need it at the time.  But, then the grandkids were coming for the summer and we suddenly needed a guest room quickly.  As you can see it is simply a big empty room with lots of potential.

Vintage, Paint and more... loft room used as guest room

This picture is terrible as it was taken the day we looked at the house - but it is basically what it still looked like before we did anything to it.  Our grandchildren were coming to stay with us for several weeks and we only had about 10 days to get this looking like something that they could inhabit over the summer.  So, we all set to work making this happen.

First of all we decided to use some really bright and cheerful colors because our grands were in the teen and preteen age group.  It had to be something fun and funky that they would love.  We needed it to address all of their needs for the couple of months they would be staying.  We decided to put our old patio love seat and chair up there and made a seating area.  I had a twin comforter that we had from the past and bought a little bit of lime green fabric to go with it.  I then proceeded to cover all the cushions with these two fabrics and came up with this "retro" funky, fun seating area.  We had a couple of tables that we had bought at the thrift stores - that we painted with Valspar's Sweet Rhapsody and Key Lime paint.  We also used some of Valspar's Anthem White.  They turned out so darn cute and made a great area to sit and read or watch TV.

Across from the sitting area we placed this bookcase unit I picked up on Craigslist for $50.  It houses the TV, gaming systems, games, DVDs, books and board games.  Plenty of things to keep them occupied that summer.  I was torn about painting it and really did not have time to then, consequently it still hasn't been painted.

At the opposite end of the room is their sleeping area.  T made their beds and I think he did a great job doing so.   We already had the comforters from our guest room previously.  The nightstand is an old black trunk that I picked up at the thrift store for $25.  T built the little white stand for it to sit on to make it a little taller and more functional as a table.

Here you can see how the sleeping and sitting areas are sort of divided by the armoire that we bought to house their clothes for the summer.  I picked this up at a thrift store for $100.  This is more than I usually like to spend on furniture I plan to repaint but, we were in dire straights for something to use quickly.  I painted it with the same paint as the tables but, I used chalkboard paint on the door so they could have fun with it also.

It turned out pretty much like we had intended it to - bright, funky and fun for some teens to spend their summer at the beach.  And, we did it all in less than 10 days time.  I loved that room but, alas it no longer exists.  The kids loved it so much that when they  moved here most of these pieces found their way to their house and the loft took on a whole other function ... but, that my friend,  is for another day.

Have you ever had to pull off a whole makeover in a very short period of time starting from scratch?  Did you pull it off?  Please tell us about it in the comments below - I love to read them and reply by email.

So till next time, have fun creating something you love...
I will be linking up to the parties found on the" I Party At"  page.
