It's Throwback Thursday and I want to bring back a little family project we did back in 2012.
I found the most wonderful shelf unit on Ana White's site - Build a Rustic X Console.
Ana has a plethora of the most marvelous plans for all kinds of furniture and they are simple to follow - so my son says. My granddaughter's needed a shelf unit in their room for their TV, books, DVD's - all the things girls collect. They fell in love with this one the same as I did. So we proceeded to build it.
I am not a power tool user or a furniture builder so T set in to build this one.
We could have left it natural but the girls wanted it to have a beachy time worn look to it.
I first painted it with a coat of grey ( my own mix of black and white until I got the shade I wanted) chalk paint and then a coat of my DIY chalk paint made from Valspar's Anthem White. After letting it dry I proceeded to sand the edges to let the grey show through and in some places the bare wood. I love the distressed look but do not usually use it personally. This piece was my first attempt to do it and honestly I probably could have taken it a bit further but was a little intimidated to do so. So I distressed it lightly.
Here is the finished project before it was whisked away to the girls house. They loved it and I was very satisfied with my first attempt at our building and distressing. A true family project that turned out quite nice.
Have you ever done a family project - built a piece from scratch or how was your first distressing job? I love to hear from you so tell me about it in the comments below. I answer all comments with email.
Until next time - enjoy making something you love.
Hugs,
I will be linking to the parties that are found on the I Party At page. Please visit them and check out all the great projects and inspiration found there.
I love Ana White - she's such a great resource! You should take a stab at the building next time. I've made 2 things based on her plans, and it wasn't that bad! I get a kick out of saying, yep, I built that!
