A Handmade Christmas - Home Tour

Written by: Cathy Carroll, Vintage, Paint and more...

Today I am going to wind up my series A Handmade Christmas with our Christmas Home Tour.  You can read about
A Handmade Christmas - Trees here,
A Handmade Christmas - Wreaths here,
and
A Handmade Christmas - Pillows here.
I am going to show you how you can have a simple and festive Christmas décor while keeping within your budget.

Vintage, Paint and more... diy pine cone wreath, Santa boots, brown parcel paper packages from cereal boxes

Welcome to our home...
This is our entry and as you can see I have placed the pine cone wreath on the front door again this year.  (You can read more about it here.) I love this wreath and could not leave it in storage.

Vintage, Paint and more... thrift store Santa boots filled with grasses and red berries

I have kept it quite simple out here with a pair of black "Santa" boots I got at a thrift store for $2.  I filled them with grasses from the yard and red berries from Dollar Tree. The packages on the bench are cereal boxes I wrapped in brown parcel paper and tissue paper and tied up with some wired ribbon left over from other projects.

Our black board sports a simple J-O-Y.

So simple and yet so festive.

On to the living room. I have already posted about our mantel here. This year I decided against getting out all the Santas, nutcrackers, and decorations. I wanted a very simple, calming décor and so chose to go with whites, browns and gold. I love this but my family, not so much. They want their reds of which will probably return next year. But in the mean time I am enjoying this new look.

Vintage, Paint and more... DIY and crafted pieces for a Christmas mantel, yarn wreath, drop cloth stockings, crafted Christmas trees

Vintage, Paint and more... crafted Christmas mantel decor - yarn wreath with diy snowflakes, paper covered NOEL, drop cloth stockings, crafted Christmas trees

I have used the yarn wreath (tutorial here) and the cone trees I am obsessed with. (tutorial here ) Also I made the N-O-E-L letters from foam core, scrapbook papers and twine. The stockings are made from a drop cloth and sheet.

Vintage, Paint and more... a neutral Christmas tree done in golds and whites

Next, is our Christmas tree ( you can see more detail here). Done in the same colors of the mantel and with many handmade ornaments and Dollar Tree finds.

Vintage, Paint and more... DIY Christmas tree skirt made from a drop cloth and a sheet

The skirt is, of course, made from a drop cloth and a sheet. You can read more about it here.

Vintage, Paint and more... DIY wreath pillow, paper crafted snowflake, buttonholing Christmas trees

I have only placed a few small vignettes in the room this year. I wanted a very simple yet festive décor. This one is on the ottoman in front of our sofa. It is a tray from Hobby Lobby that I got on a very deep discount - $6. I have a stack of old books sans covers, some cone trees (surprise), a glittered bird from Cracker Barrel and my book page snowflake ornament. (You can read that tutorial here.)  In the back ground you can see the drop cloth pillows I made. Read about the wreath one here.

Vintage, Paint and more... bleached pine cones, gold ornaments and a thrift store basked make a beautiful table Christmas centerpiece

I kept the dining room really simple with just a table centerpiece made of bleached pine cones, gold ornaments from the Dollar Tree, a thrift store basket for $1 and a large white candle I have had forever.  I also made the table runner this year and yes, it too, is made from a drop cloth and a sheet.

The ends are pleated rows of the drop cloth and sheet along with a little bit of gold decorated ribbon I had on hand.

Vintage, Paint and more... cocoa bar with Dollar Store tray chalkboard sign, homemade hot cocoa mix

In the kitchen I set up our cocoa station. I could not get by without this as the grand kids love this part. It sports DIY cocoa mix and homemade cookies along with some marshmallows. The blackboard is a Dollar Tree silver tray painted with blackboard paint. The mugs we have had for years. They are over sized and the kids love that.

Vintage, Paint and more... a thrift store cloche transformed into a Christmas scene with a diy painted Dollar store church and bottle brush tree

That ends our Home Tour 2013. I have kept it very simple and did not unpack even 10% of our Christmas decor. We are going to be traveling and will not be here enough to warrant getting it all out. I also switched things up a bit by changing from our usual color combo.  But, I wanted to show you how very simple handmade additions can be done to make your home shine for the holidays and remain on a budget.

Hope you enjoyed the series and the Home Tour.
