New House

a two story home

In October 2014 we purchased a new home and if you have been following me you know that we moved in the first part of November.  It took me a couple weeks (actually a lot more) to unpack and then the holidays were upon us. Then it was the new year and I was still trying to catch up so I never was able to post any pictures even though I had requests for them.  Today I am going to share the pictures taken on the day we moved in - just empty rooms.  This house is only 3 years old so needs no renovations - just our personal touch to make it our home. I will be sharing what we do with all of you as we do it.  But until then I only have these empty rooms to give you an idea of what we may be doing.

a kitchen with dark wood cabinetry, dark brown and gold glass tile back splash, granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances.

This is the kitchen and unfortunately is  far from my preference of a light and airy space. However I am not the only one that lives here and everyone else loves it.  If I had built this house the cabinets would be white.  I love the granite counter tops just wish they were a bit lighter.  The back splash is glass tile done in dark browns and golds also.  So paint color and decor are going to have to lighten this space up.

a breakfast nook adjoining an open concept kitchen

This is the breakfast nook that is part of the kitchen.  It is a small space and we do not use it for eating.  Instead we turned it into my creative space.  I will be sharing it with you at a later date.

dark hardwood floors in an open concept family room

The family room is next to the kitchen and is an open concept space.  It has dark hardwood floors that I love.

a corner gas fireplace with black tile surround

It also sports a gas fireplace that I have put to good use these few months that we have been here.  I love that it has two large windows that let in lots of light.

The back patio/screen room is just through that door.

a shaded screen room off the family room

This is the screen room.  It is my favorite part of the house.  Our house faces south so this part of the back yard gets very little sunlight right now and is quite chilly but I intend to put it to use this summer.

a small back yard off the screen room area

This is the view from our screen room - the back yard which is quite small.  Enough room to plant a few flowers and a couple swipes of a lawn mower and you have it.  Then a wooded area - no houses.

large bright and airy master bedroom with two large windows

The master bedroom is on the back of the house and has two large windows to let in lots of light.  I love bright airy rooms and this is definitely that.

a master bath with builder grade accessories and dark cabinetry

The master bath is actually just a builder grade bathroom with builder grade accessories.  I hope to change some of these out eventually.  There are those dark cabinets that I have been given taboo on changing.

a large garden tub with window

A nice garden tub - with a large window above it.  There is also a stand alone shower in here.

dark hardwood floors of dining room

The dining room has dark hardwood floors and is totally open to the living room.  It isn't huge but is large enough to house our dining room furniture.

a bright and airy living room with double windows and dark hardwood floors

The living room has a double window that looks out on the lake in front.  It is always bright and sunny in here.

a view of the dining room from the living room showing the columns

This is a view into the dining room from the living room.  You can see the columns that are the dividing points of the two rooms.

view of entry way from dining room

This is the area I call the entryway that is actually just a very large hallway coming in from the front door.  On the right you can see the stairway that goes to the second floor.  I don't have pictures of the second floor at this time.  It has three bedrooms (nothing amazing about them), a bathroom and a large loft area that we use as a movie room and exercise room.
I like to live in a home for a while to get the feel of it, how we utilize it and use each room, and the way light affects each space before I start making changes to it. We have a few paint swatches on the walls right now - waiting for it to be warm enough to open all the windows before we start any painting.  Very soon I will be posting some of the projects we have planned and are incorporating into our home.
Do you paint before you move into a home or do you wait for a while to get the feel of the house.  Would love for you to tell me about it in the comments below.

Thank you for stopping by and have a wonderful week creating something you love.

  1. Definitely taking my time with the painting. I agree, you have to get to know a space before you alter it.

  2. I'm like you Cathy, I like to live in a space for a while and get a feel for it before I decorate. I am also a white/ light kitchen girl, but I have to say that your kitchen is stunning. I bet you will love it!
