Farmhouse Yarn Wreath Tutorial

When cold temperatures set in I like to fill my home with warm, cozy, textural things like pillows, throws, and rugs to make the spaces appear warmer than they may be.  This year I was noticing another element that lent a warm, cozy feel to a room and that is a beautiful pom pom wreath made with yarn.  I love this wreath - so fluffy and full of texture - it's definitely the center of attention in any room you put it.  So, today I am going to share my tutorial with you so you too, can make your own pom pom wreath for your home.

Farmhouse Yarn Wreath Tutorial

You will need:

  • A wire wreath form
  • 5 skeins of yarn of your choice - I used Bernat Soft Boucle in Cream
  • Scissors
  • A piece of cardboard measuring 6"x3"

This is really an easy project - as most of mine are.  I actually made this in about 2 hours one afternoon while sitting out on the patio enjoying the warm sun but, knowing the cool temps would soon be arriving.

First, you will make yarn pom poms.

I used Bernat's Soft Boucle yarn in a cream color. I got this at AC Moore - a craft store near here but, Bernat yarn is sold in most craft stores.  (I'm sorry my pictures are not of the greatest quality on this project.)

I cut several pieces of yarn that measured 10 inches - these will be the ties for the pom poms. Just lay them aside for now.

Cut a piece of cardboard ( I used a piece of foam core) that measures 6" x 3".  Then cut a 1" slit in the middle of each end.  This is to hold your yarn tie that you cut and laid aside.

Place each end of one tie in the slits of the cardboard.

Then wind your yarn around this cardboard about 100 times. Make sure you do not catch the ends of the tie in the wrapped area.

When you have wound it 100 times pull the two ends of the tie-up and hold them in place with one hand.

Turn the cardboard over and cut down the middle of the yarn as above.

Then tie the two ends tight and you have one very large yarn pom -pom.

Tie this to your wire wreath form. I tied it onto the two middle wires to make sure they did not show.
After you have made several of these and tied them to the wreath form you will have this.

A wreath that is full of texture and just the right amount of fluffiness. I love this one but, I am thinking I am going to add another row around the outside to make it even larger. I haven't decided yet but, don't be surprised if it doesn't show up fluffier....
